Burn victims to be treated in Malaga hospital

• 31 May 2007 •

CARLOS HAYA Hospital in Malaga and the Regional Hospital of Melilla, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, have come to an agreement by which patients with serious burns will be sent to Malaga for treatment.

Members of Malaga’s Burns Unit went to Melilla to sign the agreement and present the Guide of Burn Victim Care to the medical staff in Melilla. Burns are one of the worst and most incapacitating of injuries that emergency wards deal with, and are mainly caused by domestic, traffic and work accidents.

The initial treatment is crucial to prevent complications through loss of tissue, diminished mobility and ‘Burn Victim Syndrome’. It is therefore very important to decide what primary treatment should be given and that patients be sent to a specialised Burns Unit.

It is also important to know the difference between a patient with local burns and an extensive burn victim, where the burns themselves are less important than the other problems the patient may face.  Specialised care is needed to deal with burns and basic medical knowledge is not sufficient.
