Nude Picasso comic stirs up trouble

• 31 May 2007 •

A COMIC by 36-year-old artist Nick Bertozzi, that pictures Picasso nude, has lead to a legal battle in the USA.

The comic, called ‘The Salon’, is about the history of cubism and leads the main character through a series of mysteries, crimes and bizarre adventures set in early 20th century Paris.

Picasso appears in the comic as a fun and bohemian type who is so passionate about his art, he doesn’t even realise he has no clothes on.

The problems began when it fell into the hands of a nine-year-old boy from Georgia (USA) after a local comic book shop owner gave free copies away to passers-by. The boy’s parents saw the image and the bookseller was arrested for distributing obscene material to minors.

The comic shows Picasso naked, but according to the artist, who is a father himself, the scene is treated with the greatest respect.

The court case is due to begin in June and the bookseller is facing up to one year in prison, and one thousand dollars compensation for each of the seven charges against him. He has a lawyer and the support of the Comic Legal Defence Team who defend the rights of comic artists to freely express themselves.

The author has claimed to be very upset for the problems his work has caused and is sorry that the child’s parent went straight to the courts to deal with the matter rather than asking for an apology from the bookseller.
