New sea station on schedule for opening
• 31 May 2007 •
SHIPS AND CRUISES arriving at Malaga Harbour from next October onwards will be using the new sea station, construction of which started at the end of 2005.
According to Port Authorities plans are being realised at a steady pace and they are confident that the new infrastructure will advance Malaga’s role as a cruise destination.
The current work being done on the station is the first phase of the building, which will be located in the southern corner where the old lighthouse and the tie up area are. This part of the work has been allocated to the company Necso and costs 13.1 million euros.
The second phase will be the half of the station situated more north, towards la Farola, which will cost 9.2 million euros and has a completion period of 18 months.
According to Port Authorities, the first half of the station will be able to function with no problems even if the rest is not complete, stressing that “this will also allow us to detect possible mistakes and correct them in the second phase”.
Designed by architects Barmello, Ajamil and Partners, the structure combines glass, wood and steel to form a large lobby that adapts to the curving shape of the east dock platform. It will be able to welcome around five thousand visitors at the same time and will leave some of the old tie up areas intact.
There will be a customs service, luggage office, tourist information areas, and sufficient parking for vehicles, taxis and buses.
Plans are also being made for a hotel to be built which will be connected to the station via a walk way. | Return to Top
