ELECTION RESULTS-
• 31 May 2007 • Marbella: The Partido Popular candidate Angeles Muñoz is the new mayoress of Marbella with an absolute majority which gives her 16 councillors. After 15 years of the GIL party, which has lead Marbella into corruption scandals, local people have voted for a change. Socialist party PSOE has 10 councillors and left wing Izquierda Unida, two. The new mayoress promises not to let the people of Marbella down.
Malaga: The current Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, had his fourth consecutive absolute majority and obtained 17 councillors. PSOE has 12 councillors and Izquierda Unida 2. Participation in the capital was very low.
Estepona: Participation was down by 15 per cent in the town but PSOE candidate Antonio Barrientos has doubled the number of councillors on the local government to 11 but he will need to pact with PES. Partido Andalucista obtained two councillors and Estepona 2007 and IU one each.
Torremolinos: The Partido Popular candidate and current mayor, Pedro Fernandez Montes obtained an absolute majority and three more councillors, raising the number to 17. Low participation caused Izquierda Unida to lose their only councillor on the local government team and PSOE has only one.
Benalmadena: One of the big surprises in Malaga province. Long-time Mayor Enrique Bolin (GIB party) lost his seat after twelve years and has announced his resignation because he claims people don’t understand his politics. Javier Carnero from PSOE is the new Mayor of Benalmadena and has 7 councillors. GIB has five, Partido Popular four, Izquierda Unida three, MPB with four enters the governing team as does IDB with two councillors.
Fuengirola: Esperanza Oña from the Partido Popular remains as Mayoress of Fuengirola and has three per cent more votes. PSOE and Partido Andalucista both have less votes in their favour although the number of councillors each party has in the local government has not varied, 16 for Partido Popular, eight for PSOE and one for the Partido Andalucista.
Mijas: The town remains in the hands of the PSOE although they lose one councillor, with 13 remaining. The Partido Popular has eleven councillors and there are no other parties on the local town council. Participation was down by seven per cent.
Velez-Malaga: Another one of the big surprises, Antonio Souviron from PSOE, mayor since 1996, loses his seat to the Partido Popular who obtained 100 more votes. The winning party will need a pact with GTM to rule. PSOE would need a pact with Izquierda Unida and GTM. PSOE has nine councillors, Partido Popular ten, Izquierda Unida two, Partido Andalucista one, and the GTM three. | Return to Top
