Radar to reduce road accidents

• 07 Jun 2007 •

Ascenso Simões.THE government has announced plans to hand out 200 new radar machines to traffic police to increase their ability to track down speeding vehicles in key areas.

Secretary of State for Internal Administration Ascenso Simões revealed that the new radar equipment has speed sensors and cameras that can be fitted on cars or mounted by the roadside.

“The aim is to reduce traffic accidents on our roads,” said Simões who was speaking at the  presentation ceremony of the National Strategy for Road Safety 2007-2015.

He added: “During the summer we will organise an awareness campaign to sensitize drivers to the need to reduce their speed.”

Excessive speed is considered a major contributing factor to road accidents in Portugal.

Simões also said that the number of GNR traffic patrol units monitoring drivers on Portuguese roads will be increased.

According to a study carried out by a Portuguese university, which was commissioned by the government and was presented at the event, in the 20-year period between 1986 and 2006, a total of 39,096 people died on Portuguese roads and 187,137 were seriously injured in traffic accidents. The study also revealed that a staggering 1,070,363 people suffered minor injuries.

The total cost of road accidents over the two last decades is estimated by the study to be in excess of two billion euros.
