Government unveils logo for EU presidency

• 07 Jun 2007 •

Blue flower: Symbol of Portugal.THE government has presented the logo for the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union.

According to a government spokesperson: “The blue flower is a symbol of today's Portugal: modernity, harmony, the oceans, transparency and openness to the future. The petals are arranged freely but concentrically, symbolising

the individual contribution of each Member State to the joint endeavour of building Europe.”

Meanwhile, Portugal has already revealed some of the priorities for the EU presidency which starts on July 1. Dialogue with Africa with an EU-Africa summit scheduled for December 8 and the strengthening of ties with NATO were the first priorities to be announced.

Defence Minister Nuno Severiano Teixeira, said: “One of the priorities of the Portuguese presidency is to strengthen the co-operation between the EU and NATO, boosting the strategic partnership in terms of security, defence and crisis management.”

The minister added that the flow of information between the two organisations should be more “transparent” and that they should work together so as to complement each other rather than compete on missions.

Teixeira also said that Portugal would “deepen ties with Africa and the Mediterranean, two areas in the world that are vital to the stability and security of not just Europe but the Euro-Atlantic region.”
