New cruise ship terminals to attract more tourists

• 07 Jun 2007 •

Tourism authorities: Aim to increase the number ofPORTUGAL will have two new cruise liner terminals by 2010. The new terminals, which have been announced by tourism authorities, will be built in Portimão, Algarve and in Lisbon’s Santa Apolónia area.  Portimão Mayor Manuel da Luz told The Euro Weekly News that work on the new terminal will start this  summer.

“Portimão and the Algarve have excellent conditions to become a very interesting port of call for cruise ship companies. Our only problem was our port which wasn’t big enough to receive large cruise liners. I can now confirm that by the end of 2007 works at Portimão harbour will be completed and we will have new facilities which will enable us to       increase sharply the number of cruise ship passengers visiting us. We have already started to promote the Algarve abroad. Earlier this year a delegation of the Portimão Town Council participated in the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention in Miami Beach and the response of the public who visited our stand was very positive, so we expect that in the near future the Algarve could also become known as one of southern Europe’s favourite ports of call among cruise ship passengers.” The two new terminals under construction are part of a government strategy to attract tourism through holiday packages that include cruises with stopovers in Lisbon and the Algarve.
