World Children's Day remembers all those who are still missing
• 07 Jun 2007 •
ON World Children's day, June 1, dozens of initiatives took place all over Portugal. The main focus this year was to remember children who have gone missing.
Around two thousand children joined the mothers of two of Portugal's missing children – Rui Pedro and Rui Pereira – and released balloons in Matosinhos, near Oporto, with the names and dates on which those two and other children went missing.
In Lisbon, the Dona Estefânia children's hospital has promoted a “Healthy Living” programme for children and at the Portuguese Cancer Institute children were visited by Noddy and Bob the Builder.
On the same day, three music bands from Lagos announced a concert in support of Madeleine and the McCann family. The concert, with performances by the Lagos Jazz Orchestra with Ricky Taylor, the Algarve Wind Orchestra, and the Lacobrigense Philharmonic Society Marching Band will take place on June 7 at the Lagos Cultural Centre.
The funds raised by this event will be delivered to the Find Madeleine Foundation and the Lagos Child Protection Commission.
The McCanns are continuing their visits to other European countries to raise public awareness of their daughter's disappearance.
After the Vatican, where they met with Pope Benedict XVI, they visited Spain, where they launched another appeal for people to help in the search for their daughter. Whilst in Madrid, the McCanns met with NGOs and children's organisations, and took part in a television programme dedicated to abducted children.
Gerry McCann said he and his wife were sympathetic to all parents who were in the same situation. Their next stops on their European tour were Berlin and Amsterdam, the capitals of two countries who have a large number of frequent visitors to the Algarve. The aim is to find any information regarding their missing daughter. | Return to Top
