Celebrity Vault and Algarvida Gallery provide a truly eclectic display

• 07 Jun 2007 •

Mother and daughter: Isabel and Katja.THE opening of a stunning new art gallery, Algarvida in Carvoeiro, brought the stars out in force. Muhammad Ali, Jane    Fonda, the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney – to name just a few – were seen as limited edition photographs taken by some of the world’s leading photographers. They are contained in a separate section of the gallery named the   Celebrity Vault.

The large, light and airy display areas hold an extraordinary mixture of art – from sculptures, ceramics, paintings and prints   to antique maps, photographic books and designer greetings cards.  With such an eclectic collection, the gallery is massed with visual stimuli, gathered together by the impeccable taste of its three German owners.

A welcoming speech by Isabel Moeller – daughter of Thea and mother of Katja Steenken, her partners in the venture – was given in English to an international group of     invited guests. Isabel  acknowledged many of the artists, whose work can be seen at the gallery,   giving a special mention to Thomas Forsaith. Proceeds from the sale of his oil paintings, of local scenes, will be donated to the Lagos Society for the Protection of Animals.

Earlier in the day the family had attended the  funeral of Thea’s brother, Bob Goldmann, a well-known and respected member of the Algarve’s expatriate community.  Despite their sad loss the family hosted a wonderful opening party at the gallery, where guests were intrigued to find such a varied selection of work under one roof.

Perhaps it is because the owners span three generations that the gallery   contains such a broad spectrum of art. A print of Warhol’s soup tins hangs beside a poster of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Modern three-dimensional models by Volker Kuehn float inside boxed frames and huge oil paintings by Algarve artist, Meinke Flessman, grace the walls.

Although the Celebrity Vault is an important  aspect of the gallery, there is much more besides.  Depending upon their budget, customers might leave with a Hollywood star costing thousands of euros, or an appealing print of a painting, priced at just a few.

For sheer fascination, Celebrity Vault is a ‘must’. It is located on the left-hand side of Rua Barranco, on the one-way system leading out of Carvoeiro.  Phone: 282 356 577.
