Airport families in fight for a quieter home life

• 07 Jun 2007 •

FAMILIES who say their lives are regularly disturbed by planes landing and taking off from Malaga Airport are battling o have their homes insulated.Councillor for the Campanillas and Churriana District, Jose Hazañas, said a letter, signed by more than 20 residential communities, has been sent to Spanish Aerial Navigation and Airports (AENA) directors demanding new measuring of noise levels in their areas, which are claimed to be outside the affected boundaries.

Calculations of the number of properties affected by aircraft noise   at Malaga Airport has  been under discussion for years, with AENA putting the approximate number at 1,000, while the PP Government party estimates the figure at 4,000 - 5,000, with many in the Churriana, Camanillas and Guadalmar areas. In recent months the town council has sought to have sound level meters installed in these areas to see if insulation is justified, but Councillor Hazañas says none of the measures was implemented despite “several government promises, the first at Christmas, and then Easter.”

The town council estimates that the worst affected areas not within the AENA-set boundaries are Santa Rosalia-Maqueda (approximately 1,000 properties),  Las Castañetas and Santa Agueda (500), Las Manceras (200), Churriana (more than 1,000) and Guadalmar. In recent months, n excess of 1,000 homes in Churriana and Campanillas have been insulated following successful protests from disgruntled residents.
