Criminal took drugs before age of ten
• 07 Jun 2007 • MANY of today’s drug addicts, who if they turn to a life of crime most commonly do so through trafficking and robbery, first began taking drugs when they were aged about 12 or 13 years old. In one extreme local case, an arrested person had started taking drugs before the age of 10. Experts at the Legal Institute of Medicine in Malaga admit their concern over the worrying tendency, especially with many drug users apparently now turning to crime at much earlier ages.
A report by the Doctors of the Institute of Medicine, studying the hundreds of patients they regularly assisted last year, has concluded that there was a surge in drug taking criminals under the age of 15, and in some cases under the age of 12, during 2006. According to the Institute’s Chief of Service, Doctor Francisco Martinez, and Doctors Jose Manuel Burgos and Eduardo Hidalgo, 75 per cent of those arrested began taking drugs under the age of 20, and 32 per cent between the ages of 11 and 15.
Cannabis is the main “initiation” drug, followed by cocaine and heroine “mixes” and then cocaine. Most of those arrested for drug related crimes are young males, many with previous convictions. | Return to Top
