Portugal could be hit by hurricanes

• 13 Jun 2007 •

A GERMAN scientist who works for one of the world's biggest insurance companies says that Portugal is likely to be hit by hurricanes in the next 20 years.

The scientist said that global warming and its effects on human activities and the effect of greenhouse gases on climate change will be the cause of a series of natural disasters of varying degrees of violence. Talking about last year’s hurricane season, the Head of Geo Risks Research of the Munich Reinsurance Group, Peter Hoeppe, said: “This was the first real hurricane system to approach Europe, when hurricane Vince showed up close to Madeira and made its way into Spain and Portugal. This is a totally new phenomenon, where hurricanes are generated so far north and east that they end up drifting to the east. This means Europe can no longer be said to be hurricane-free. The storm didn’t reach the coasts of Europe at hurricane strength, because the waters in-between are still too cold, but it is just conceivable that this could happen in the near future.”

Portuguese meteorologist, Anthimio de Azevedo, doesn’t agree with this theory and said that it is more probable that Portugal will be affected by severe droughts instead. Anthímio de Azevedo said: “With everything we've been forecasting in the last few years we can think of a serious shortage of water in the Iberian Peninsula, but hurricanes by 2025 seem highly unlikely.”
