Low cost computers for students

• 13 Jun 2007 •

Head of Microsoft Europe, the Middle East and AfriPRIME MINISTER José Sócrates has announced a new programme for the next three years aimed at boosting computer literacy and use among students, teachers and workers attending training programmes.

The programme will ensure that all students enrolled in the 10th grade will get subsidised computers and broadband Internet access.

Neil Holloway, head of     Microsoft Europe, the Middle East and Africa said it is “an absolutely fantastic initiative to have low cost computers and high speed internet for so many people.”

Microsoft Portugal has now announced it will “provide software – the latest version of Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 – for those low cost computers.”

He added that in all of Europe he had not seen any government so committed to new technologies, to innovating and improving the technological know-how of its citizens as Portugal.

The Microsoft president said he was convinced the initiative would start to bear fruit within the next 18 to 20 months.

”When these half million people have access to the internet, among them students and teachers, we are going to see a greater use of technology, which will in turn mean more confidence and more  responsibility in one's occupation,” concluded Holloway.

The programme is being sponsored by the three mobile phone companies – TMN, Vodaphone and Optimus – as part of a commitment they made when the third generation mobile phone licences were settled to the Information Society. These initiatives include e-schools, e-teachers, and e-opportunities.
