Praia da Rocha under improvement

• 08 Mar 2007 •

THE Praia da Rocha area is set to take up its important role within the municipality of Portimão when the redevelopment plan is completed. The second phase of the project for the tourist area should be completed by the end of May, with work being carried out along the entire seafront between Hotel Jupiter and the Tomas Cabreira Avenue viewpoint where a new tourism office and a police station will be built. The Urban Redevelopment Plan for Praia da Rocha launched by Portimão Municipal Council hopes to take advantage of the existing resources in this area by revitalising many of the local different facilities. This included the one million euro project for the Miradouro dos Três Castelos viewpoint and the Praia da Rocha beach, which have already been completed. Work on the viewpoint included a reorganisation of the market stalls of the various street sellers through the construction of better infrastructures. Furthermore, the steps leading down to the beach were given a facelift, including the installation of appropriate urban facilities and improved street lighting. According to the Town Council, the idea is to give the space back to the people, making the site a more appealing tourist attraction. The Praia da Rocha project further included the laying of a boardwalk all along the beach, whilst landscaping and improved access were also incorporated into the Redevelopment Plan. In addition to the support of the Portimão Municipal Council, the project also enjoyed the participation of the Algarve Regional Co-ordination and Development Commission (the project manager) and the local delegation of the Maritime Transport and Port Institute.
