Illegal Chinese found locked in secret underground workshop

• 14 Jun 2007 •

A SECRET, locked underground workshop where illegal Chinese immigrants worked long hours to help pay off debts has been uncovered by immigration officers in Malaga province. Agents from the Immigration Networks and Document Fraud Unit at the Provincial Police Station discovered the illegally-run tailoring workshop in Campanillas. They found ten Chinese citizens, including seven who had entered Spain without visas, working without contracts or social security.

They spent most days working in the locked basement, specially built to prevent detection, without even basic workers’ rights.

Police have revealed that the workshop managers travelled to China to bring workers into Spain.

They kept them in inhumane conditions to pay off debts accumulated by travel and living costs. They were only allowed out to nearby shops on odd occasions to buy essential items before being escorted back to the workshop.

Several Malaga city companies supplied the workshop with clothes, collecting completed tailored items after a few days.
