Ceiling collapse in centre

• 14 Jun 2007 •

PART of a ceiling in the cultural centre Padre Manuel in Estepona has collapsed without causing any injuries. The building was built half a century ago and was renovated earlier this year. Asunción López, the Councillor for Culture, said that the main structure of the building isn’t in danger of further collapse. The original ceiling on the first floor fell down early in the morning, when there was no one in the building and broke through the new plaster ceiling that was constructed during the recent renovations.

When employees arrived to the recently inaugurated centre, they found rubble in the hallway to the main work room. However, classes and workshops in the centre will continue as the classrooms are not affected by the collapse.

Asunción Lopez announced that the building will be inspected to avoid further incidents and she assured that there is no original ceiling left elsewhere in the building.

The cultural centre of Padre Manuel consists of a library, children’s study rooms, a toy library, a video store, a book deposit, an exhibition room and a function room that holds up to 160 people.
