Workers protest against reforms

• 08 Mar 2007 •

Thousands have taken to the streets of the PortuguMORE than 100,000 people marched through Lisbon in the biggest labour protest in 20 years against the government's economic policies and social reforms. The demonstration was organised by the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers, CGTP, a body which represents more than 140 different workers unions throughout the country.

CGTP said that around 150,000 people participated in the protest while police estimated that 120,000 were present. According to CGTP, workers took to the streets of the Portuguese capital demanding higher pay and pensions and an end to the government's civil service reforms.

The demonstration was also a protest against the government’s decision to shut down emergency services at several public hospitals to cut spending.  To reduce the country's budget deficit and sharpen Portugal's competitive edge, Prime Minister Jose Socrates has introduced a large number of unpopular reforms, including a hike in taxes, performance evaluations and halts in career promotions for civil servants, as well as cuts in health and retirement benefits.
