Bright lights and paintings
• 08 Mar 2007 • THE collaborative talents of international artist Jessica Dunn and her Portuguese husband, José Ribeiro, have resulted in a glorious exhibition of paintings and hand crafted lamps. It will be open to the public later on this month, displayed at Clive Dunn’s private studio, beside his Boliqueime home in the Algarve.
Although most British people remember Clive as the over-enthusiastic Corporal Jones in Dad’s Army, few realise he is also an artist of repute. It is in this creative field that his daughter, Jessica has followed, establishing herself as one of Europe’s finest artists with her paintings seen in places such as London’s Eaton Gallery and the Florence International Biennial, as well as the prestigious Saatchi website.
The exhibition will include a new collection of her paintings, many of them reflecting her love of the Algarve coast and its dramatic seas. Images of towering cliffs, lines of wind-tossed surf and animated human figures, fill the canvases with movement and intense light.
Others show more tranquil scenes such as Jessica’s father and her daughter together on a seafront. There are beautiful still-life studies and typical Algarvean Churro sheep resting in the fields.
Another composition, inspired by a visit to Morocco, pictures a flock of goats climbing in the branches of an Argan tree – like all of Jessica’s paintings – it is based on reality and executed using a distinctive impressionist style.
Together with metalwork artist José (Zé) she has created a range of lamp stands – including candleholders, hurricane lights, electric table and standard lamps – as well as chandeliers.
Zé is the creative force in their design, using an array of metal shapes to form the bases. He brazes steel, copper, brass, bronze and cast iron, finally polishing or treating the surfaces with acid to give a rich patina.
Jessica creates hand-thrown ceramic sections, which are then assembled with the metal parts to make the stands. The sheen of the pottery glaze compliments the quality of the metal, giving an impression of exotic opulence.
Every object is unique with prices starting at 45 euros for the smallest pieces.
A chandelier costs several hundreds of euros and table lamps around 80 euros. Commissions are also taken to match objects to a particular colour scheme or preferred design.
The exhibition opens on March 23, 5pm-9pm, with drinks and nibbles and again on March 24, 11am-6pm. Appointments can be made to look at the work at other times.
