Search for tourist unearths no leads
• 21 Jun 2007 •
SEARCHES continue for a German tourist who has been missing from Alcoutim, near Algarve’s border with Spain, since June 9.
A Spanish police helicopter even joined in the search with the help of thermal imaging to try to find traces of him.
Despite the large search operation in which dozens of GNR police officers with sniffer dogs, as well as teams of local fire fighters have participated, the whereabouts of the sixty-nine-year-old German tourist, Karl Kleine-Brockhoff, are still unknown.
Portuguese Civil Protection helicopters and navy boats were also searching for the man at the Guadiana River area.
The missing man was staying at Balurcos, an Algarve village near the river, on a vacation with his family. He left his holiday villa early in the afternoon and said that he was going on foot to the handicraft fair at Alcoutim, eight kilometres away. His wife and another couple chose to go by car and by night fall, concerned with his disappearance, they alerted the authorities.
The missing man, who is about 1.9 metres tall, was familiar with the path to Alcoutim, and according to the police, is a passionate hiker and in good health. He has white hair, light skin and only speaks German. When he was last seen, he was wearing beige coloured shorts, a blue shirt and a hat. The Judicial Police are already investigating this case. The German man’s family had first feared a heart attack, but now police are also investigating the possibility the tourist may have been kidnapped. His son Thomas, a Washington DC-based correspondent for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, flew to Portugal as soon as he learned about his missing father. He told Germany’s newspaper Der Spiegel his father had no credit card, no ID card and no driver's license. He however added that his father was carrying 500 euros with him because he was afraid of burglars and never left cash in hotel rooms. | Return to Top
