Search for Maddie still developing
• 21 Jun 2007 •
THE McCanns are preparing a worldwide campaign, which includes the release of 50 balloons from 50 countries to highlight the 50th day since Madeleine went missing. Events in Germany, France, Australia, Canada, America, Dubai and El Salvador have been already confirmed.
The police recently investigated two new clues in the case of Maddie’s disappearance. Antonio Toscano, a Spanish free-lance journalist told a series of newspapers he had found out who had abducted Madeleine. The Spaniard mentioned a convicted paedophile, known as “EFrances”, saying he had organised the abduction of Maddie and could still be holding the child.
He also said he has already contacted the Spanish and Portuguese police forces and handed over the information he had, adding that he wanted to speak directly to the parents to disclose more information to them about the identity of the suspect. Judicial Police (PJ) spokesman Olegário Sousa has confirmed that the PJ has been contacted by this man.
The McCann’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell also has confirmed that Toscano had contacted the couple, but he added that at every stage Toscano declined to provide a name for the suspect. Mitchell stressed that this was both frustrating and potentially hurtful to Gerry and Kate.
The PJ last week were also investigating an anonymous letter sent to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf with two maps, with the alleged location of Madeleine’s body. One of the maps pointed to a scrubland area near the village of Odeáxere, 15km from Praia da Luz. Police sealed off the area, however after three and a half hours, the search was called off and the PJ issued a statement saying that they had found nothing so decided to abandon this line of investigation. After a meeting with Portuguese and British police to get an update on the investigation, Gerry McCann said: “We were reassured that information continues to come in, and we continue to pray for a breakthrough. We were extremely disappointed in the publication of the anonymous letter in The Telegraaf claiming to know where Madeleine is buried. Although all information will be taken seriously, we were very upset that the credibility of this letter had not been examined and, more importantly, was published before the Portuguese police had an opportunity to investigate the claim, and search the area if appropriate without massive media attention. “We feel strongly that this was an irresponsible piece of journalism and even if it were true, is insensitive and cruel. One can imagine how upsetting it is for Kate and I to hear of such claims through the media and if every piece of information was published like this, there would be nothing else in the newspapers.” | Return to Top
