180,000 wrong tax returns

FOR the first time in Portugal, more people filled their income tax returns over the internet than in person, the Finance Ministry has announced. Returns in 2007 saw 60 per cent of all taxpayers using the online service, a 27 per cent increase on the previous year. However 180,000 tax returns had to be corrected because of differences between earnings and tax retentions submitted by employers and employees. The ministry said that tax inspectors are investigating the contradictory data to assess which cases were plain mistakes and which could be considered as attempts to defraud.
