Counterfeit euro notes rise sparks alert and a warning

AN INCREASE in the number of false 50, 100 and 200 euro notes has been detected throughout the Costa del Sol.

Despite concerns by shops and businesses, security sources say that the number of reported cases remains at only about six a month.

Many people who discover they have a false note do not report it but try to pass on the counterfeit to avoid suffering a loss of money.

However, police have warned that such an action is criminal, with possible jail sentences of up to two years.

Since the euro was introduced into Spain at the start of 2002, police say few criminals have managed to accurately counterfeit notes, with most false notes in circulation – photocopies or printouts - easily detected as they are on poor standard paper and lack quality security thread features.

People anxious to check for counterfeit notes should,

* Inspect colour for clear definition

* Check for perfectly white water marks

* Closely inspect the security thread
