Diverted flight causes chaos"

• 21 Jun 2007 •

A BRITISH AIRWAYS flight which was travelling between Madrid and Gibraltar was diverted to Malaga because it was late leaving Madrid and the flight controller in Gibraltar had gone home.

The plane was scheduled to arrive in Gibraltar at 9:30pm was delayed until 11pm due to   problems at Barajas airport.

Gibraltar airport is open from 8am to 11pm and because flight controllers have to keep to very strict timetables, there was no-one in the control tower to receive the flight, and it was sent to Malaga. Airport staff in Gibraltar said they regretted    the inconvenience but that  controller hours are established worldwide and any change in their hours have to be notified six months in advance.

Passengers on the flight were told in English that they were landing in Malaga but not given a reason why, and Spanish speaking passengers had to be informed by a bilingual Gibraltarian passenger that they should disembark normally and they should either make their own travel arrangements or catch a coach. However, very few people managed to find out where the coach was.

Passengers claim there was no-one at the airport to give them further information or to offer them something to eat or drink.

Most people had to call taxis or relatives in able to continue their journey. Upon arrival in Gibraltar, there was nobody from the company to offer them an explanation and the passengers have been told to get in contact with offices in England.
