Stricter penalties for dangerous drivers

• 21 Jun 2007 •

DESPITE the new points system on drivers’ licences in Spain, explicit publicity campaigns recommending safe driving and the many messages and efforts dedicated to reducing mortality on Spanish roads, the figures are still worrying.

Penalties for dangerous driving will soon be stricter and calls are being made for people caught drink driving or speeding to be sent to jail. Spokespersons for six parliamentary groups proposed this partial modification of the    legal system to enforce stricter penalties for those not complying with the law. The proposal is not supported by the PP, PNV or IU political parties. Specifically it has been proposed that going over 200 kilometres per hour on the motorway, over 180 on a conventional road and over 110 in urban areas, should all be punished with a three to six month jail sentence. The same sentence would be applied for those driving with more than 1.2 gram per litre alcohol content in their blood and for those still   driving after losing all points on their driving licence, will be banned between one and six years.

Anyone caught driving dangerously and putting people lives in danger could face up to five years in jail if the driver is “conscious of putting people lives at risk”. Placing obstacles or spilling slippery substances, on the road, could be punishable by community work lasting between 10 and 40 days.

President of the Road Safety Comité, Jorde Jane (from CiU) assured that this is “necessary and useful” in preventing traffic accidents. According to him the current legal system does not successfully resolve traffic crimes.
