Seniors learn to see through scam artists

• 21 Jun 2007 •

PENSIONERS will learn how to avoid scams, particularly in telemarketing offering free holidays, “miracle products” and fake    revisions in their homes, it has been announced by The Junta de Andalucia. The courses, which will be given to around 1000 OAPs, will take place in centres throughout the province and the aim is to prevent people over a certain age from becoming scam victims.

A DVD will be used during courses to help give examples of the most frequent scam situations experienced by pensioners. The courses will be carried out over four months and will focus on situations including calls to numbers normally starting with 800, 803, 806, 807 or 907 which could be hiding some sort of deception – where the person on the other end assures you will have a fabulous free   holiday. On many occasions, people will remain on the line listening to the telemarketer   only to find that their phone bills have drastically increased as the cost of the phone call is   between 35 cents and three euros per minute.

Other frequent scams include telemarketing companies selling “miracle products” which use aggressive sales techniques and fake technicians who turn up at peoples’ homes claiming they need to check the gas, electricity or water.
