TAPAS stage Killing of Sister George
• 21 Jun 2007 •
TAPAS amateur theatrical group once again took to the stage to perform what is a very difficult play, The Killing of Sister George. The set itself was a credit to all involved in creating and erecting it, and to Leroy Lingwood, the set designer.
Leroy, also the director, is no stranger to the stage having won the BBC Drama award in 1964, and spent a number of years as a member of the BBC Drama Rep. Under his guidance, the cast of four females captured perfectly the humour, pathos and dark side of the play.
It would be unfair to select only one or two members of the cast for mention as all were excellent. Sue Sullivan as the BBC’s Mrs Mercy extracted the humour from her role with perfectly timed delivery, Pippa Randall playing ‘Childie’ McNaught as always was marvellous, word perfect, with even facial and body language reflecting her role.
It was also hard to believe that Loma Rogers, as Madam Xenia, was making her acting debut. Her foreign accent and flamboyant gestures never appeared forced or false but completely natural. Susie Constance gave an excellent performance in what must have been a difficult role for her being a very feminine person, but she was totally credible as the “butch”, gin drinking, hard cursing June Buckridge (Sister George). | Return to Top
