Stolen cars found as gang held in swoop for mass bank thefts
• 28 Jun 2007 • NINE people, including seven Chileans, a Canadian minor and a Swiss national, have been arrested in Benalmadena and are awaiting trial suspected of belonging to a gang that has carried out more than 50 robberies throughout Spain, mainly in the Levante area. They specialised in attacking victims as they left banks, mainly in Murcia, Alicante and Valencia, but additionally robbed houses, stole cars and also operated as street pickpockets.
The gang used cars stolen from garages and dealers to commit their crimes. Ten vehicles have since been recovered and returned to their owners. The suspects often approached would-be victims to ask for directions, or to seek help in changing a car tyre, and frequently threatened them with knives and physical violence.
Several arrest warrants had previously been issued against the gang in various Spanish provinces. Police searched the premises where they were based in Benalmadena and found stolen jewellery, money, mobile phones, electrical equipment and tools used in the robberies. A number of high-quality counterfeit documents were also discovered. | Return to Top
