Indigenous species under threat of extinction

• 28 Jun 2007 •

OF THE 390 different species of vertebrates that live in Malaga province, 261 are at risk of extinction – especially sea mammals (88 per cent), reptiles (76) and birds (74). The main factor in this increase in threatened animals is attritubed to human activity. In Malaga, 9,633 animals were admitted to the Centre for Recuperation of Threatened Species between 1998 and 2005 for different reasons including loss of habitat and robbing of nests (23 per cent), trapping (6 per cent), poisoning (4), and shooting (3). Humans were responsible for their decline in 36 per cent of the reported cases.

The report also explains that the introduction of exotic species into the local environment is putting indigenous species at further risk.
