Fatima’s new cathedral

• 18 Oct 2007 •

MORE than 250,000 pilgrims were last week present at Fatima’s Catholic shrine to attend the ceremonies which marked the 90th anniversary of the last time the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared before three Portuguese shepherd children. The ceremonies included the opening of one of the world’s largest churches, which was recently completed on the site.

The new church which cost more than 60 million euros was built due to the increasing number of visitors that come to the shrine every year.

It is estimated that more than five million travellers per year come to Portugal in order to visit the shrine.

The new church can hold some 9,000 people at any one time. Portugal’s President Cavaco Silva, as well as Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican's Secretary of State and about 40 other cardinals and bishops from around the world attended the opening ceremony which included a televised statement to the gathered crowds from Pope Benedict XVI.
