Creative writing course
• 18 Oct 2007 •
EXPERIENCED journalist, Jenny Grainer, provides an opportunity for people to extend their creative writing skills this Saturday, October 20, at the Hotel Garbe, in Armação de Pêra. The one-day course, intended for anyone who wants to extend their writing skills is geared to the individual needs of students.
Jenny’s own writing skills are best exemplified in her autobiography: ‘Portugal and the Algarve, now and then’.
It is an amusing and often poignant life story giving real insight into the numerous changes that have happened over more than 30 years. Written in her easy reading style, once opened it is the sort of book that is difficult to put down, with numerous colourful Algarvian characters coming alive on the page.
Jenny has a theatrical background but nowadays she is just as likely to be composing articles and stories as directing plays. She has successfully run many creative writing courses helping many people to express their innermost feelings, emotions and fantasies. Jenny’s command of Portuguese is fluent and she attributes this to her arrival here in the late 1960s when virtually nobody spoke English. She explained: “That has been a major change, with many Portuguese people now speaking English. Sometimes when I run writers’ workshops, people of both nationalities turn up.
“One group included an established novelist from England who was in his eighties and two Portuguese women who wanted to improve their written English. It was true mixed-ability teaching but we had fun.”
Jenny’s book: ‘Portugal and the Algarve, now and then’, is available at many outlets including Griffin Book Shop, the Carvoeiro Book Cellar and Faro Airport.
Creative writing courses at Hotel Garbe, October 20 and 27, November 13 and 15, December 8 and 15, February 12 and 14, March 8 and 15 and April 7 and 11.
