Province to get rare disease facility

• 18 Oct 2007 •

MALAGA is to receive one of the three new laboratories to be established in Andalucia for the early detection of rare illnesses. The other two will be in Sevilla and Granada. The total investment will be one million euros. Beginning in 2008, the Andalucian Public Health Service will carry out tests on newborn babies to screen for 33 different diseases, rather than only two that are currently checked for using the heel test. The Plan of Attention for People Affected by Rare Illnesses has a budget of 20 million euros until 2012 and the tests will be performed using several different methods. Rare diseases are those that affect less than five people in 100,000. In Andalucia, half a million people are affected.
