Prince and Princess of Asturias visit the Alentejo
• 25 Oct 2007 • THE president of Portugal and Mrs Cavaco Silva received the Prince of Asturias, Dom Felipe de Borbón, and Princess Letizia, in Beja, where the party visited the Church of Our Lady of Prazeres and the Diocesan Museum. The president and his wife then assisted in the presentation of the Keys of the City of Beja to the royal visitors. Later, the two couples lunched in private at the Convent of São Francisco before departing for the Alqueva Dam. There, they took part in a ceremony where the international prize “Puente de Alcântara” was awarded to the Alqueva Dam, and later presided at the inaugural ceremony of the Memorial Sculpture of the Hydroelectric Power Plant of the Multipurpose Alqueva Undertaking.
In his speech, President Silva said: “Dom Felipe was one of the first international personages that I had the honour to receive after my election to the Presidency of the Republic, even before I took office. On the other hand, it was during my State Visit to Spain, the first, that the announcement was made that the Princess of Asturias was expecting the arrival of a further child, Infanta Sofia, a moment of happiness my wife and I had the opportunity to share with Their Majesties, the Kings and their Royal Highnesses the Princes of Asturias. After such outstanding events it is easy to understand the very personal satisfaction with which my wife and I receive Your Highnesses in Portugal, and jointly hold this ceremonial act.”
Commenting on the Puente de Alcantara Prize which was awarded to the Alqueva Hydroelectric Power Station, President Silva stressed Portugal was honoured to receive such a prestigious award.
He said: “Alqueva, the largest artificial lake in Europe, is both a strategic water reserve and a fundamental infrastructure for the development of the agricultural, tourism and energy production sectors,” adding, “this project relates to two fundamental areas of our co-operation with Spain: Water and Energy and this prize brings attention to the importance of renewable energy sources within the framework of the sustainability of our model of development.” | Return to Top
