Morinho among the 2006 Allgarve stars

• 31 Oct 2007 •

The 2008 edition of the ‘Allgarve’: Promotional caFOOTBALL manager Jose Mourinho is to take part in the 2008 edition of the government sponsored ‘Allgarve’ campaign to attract more tourists to the Algarve. The Secretary of State for Tourism, Bernardo Trindade, confirmed that the second edition of the ‘Allgarve’ promotional programme is already being prepared by the government, adding that new names will be added to the list of Portuguese celebrities which have helped to promote Algarve tourism abroad this year. “Mourinho is an important reference of the capacity and ability that the Portuguese people have to make things happen,” said Trindade, adding that Mourinho will be joined by Fado singer Mariza, Triathlon World Champion Vanessa Fernandes, conductor Joana Carneiro and architect Miguel Câncio Martins in this marketing drive to highlight the merits of the Algarve as a tourist destination.

Without revealing the exact figures, the Secretary of State for Tourism said that the government is planning to increase the budget for next year’s edition of the ‘Allgarve’ campaign because its programme is expected to have a larger number of events than the 2007 edition which had a total budget of three million euros. The details of the campaign are currently being discussed with Algarve town councils and the region’s Tourism Board. Some details of the 2008 list of events for the Algarve have already been disclosed by the Tourism Board (RTA). Its president António Pina revealed that the event calendar will include an ‘Algarve Dedicated Fashion Week’, during which Portugal’s top fashion designers will present their latest beachwear creations in a series of events throughout the region.

Pina said a new campaign to attract more families to choose the Algarve for their weekend winter breaks is also being prepared. The RTA president further announced that several locations in the Algarve will be used for the filming of three major international productions by film-makers from Spain and Brazil. Talking to journalists at the presentation of the 2008 RTA plan of activities, Pina stressed: “We have set as the main objective for the RTA to work on the promotion of the Algarve as a tourist destination.” He pointed out as key items for next year’s promotion of the region’s tourism the second edition of the ‘Allgarve’ campaign, the International Music Festival of the Algarve (FIMA), the Algarve Challenge Trophy and the Vilamoura Equestrian Tour. Other projects presented for next year include the remodelling of RTA internet sites, as well as the release of an updated version in Portuguese and English of the Guide to Algarve’s Classified Tourist Accommodation and the Guide to Algarve Beaches.

According to Pina, for 2008, the RTA has a budget of 6.4 million euros to share between promotion and entertainment (53 per cent of the total value) and costs and financing (47 per cent). The Algarve is now the ninth largest tourist destination in Europe and, in national terms, it is in first place in the number of hotel overnight stays and in second place in the number of tourists. The RTA president concluded by saying that according to the latest data, 2007 will be the third consecutive year of growth and consolidation of the tourist activity in the Algarve.
