Strikes called off

• 31 Oct 2007 •

THE situation at national airports was back to normal after the TAP pilots' strike and Portugalia’s cabin crew's strike were both called off. Last week TAP had to cancel several flights, particularly to European destinations because of the strike which was scheduled to continue through October 25 and 27 and November 5, 7 and 9. The TAP strike was called off after the airline the pilots' union and the government reached an agreement to restart the negotiations about several issues topped by the government’s intention to increase the retirement age for commercial airline pilots.

Transports and Public Works Minister Mário Lino said the end of the strike was a victory for the country and for the affected airline companies. The minister had previously considered the strike action untimely and admitted that he was considering mandatory recruitment. He was unwilling to talk about the losses in revenue. Talks between the government and pilots will start with no agreement in sight which may mean that the Union could possibly call a new strike before the end of the year.

A second strike affecting a Portuguese airline was called off last week. Isabel Fragoso, a union delegate for Portugalia Airlines, which was recently acquired by TAP, explained the strike was called off because the President of TAP, Fernando Pinto, had announced his intention to meet with workers from Portugalia. She however added that no date had been set for the meeting.

The ground crew strike was called by the union to demand the same rights for Portugalia crew and TAP crew. TAP recently the regional airline. A source of the National Union of Civil Aviation Cabin Crew said that “it doesn't make sense how the same administration can pay less for a chief of cabin at the top of his career in Portugalia than it does to a cabin staff member at TAP.”
