EU fighting illegal fishing

• 08 Nov 2007 •

THE European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Joe Borg, came to Portugal to participate in a high level conference on eradicating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The Conference was hosted jointly by the European Commission and the Portuguese presidency of the European Union. It brought together EU Fisheries Ministers and Representatives with their counterparts from the North Atlantic and Africa to discuss how to combat international trade in IUU fisheries products.

A first joint Spanish-Portuguese patrol mission to fight illegal fishing in the Gulf of Cadiz and the Algarve took place recently. The four-day mission involved the administration and inspection services of both countries. Officers of Portugal’s Fishing and Agricultural Authority as well as the Air Force and the Navy department of the Southern Maritime and Port authority at Vila Real de Santo António. The joint operations took place both on land and at sea with a Spanish inspector on board the ‘Afonso Cerqueira’ Portuguese Navy vessel and a Portuguese fishing inspector on board the Spanish patrol boat’Alcotan IV’.
