Importance of child-proofing your house

• 08 Nov 2007 •

WHILE most small children’s deaths are caused by traffic accidents, the second cause is domestic accidents – mostly by asphyxiation and choking. For every child that dies as a result of an accident inside the home, 160 are admitted into hospital and around 2,000 have to be treated in an emergency ward. The Ministry of Health has set up a campaign to try to decrease the current figures and make parents more aware of possible dangers within the home.

According to the World Health Organisation 48 per cent of the total number of deaths of small children in Spain are as a result of traffic accidents, 21 per cent involve choking, 13 per cent drown, 6 per cent die from a fall, 3 per cent are a result of fire and 2 per cent are intoxications. One to four-year-old boys are at highest risk of drowning in bathtubs and swimming pools, while burns and intoxications are more common in children of any sex under the age of two.

The awareness campaign – costing more than two million euros - hopes to prevent these accidents from happening by educating parents on how to make their homes safer. Precautionary measures including bicycle helmets, socket protectors and locks for cupboards containing dangerous products are just some of the simple ideas being encouraged by the campaign.
