University Hospital sends patients home due to no beds

• 08 Nov 2007 •

Cancelled operations: Not enough beds.UNIVERSITY hospital in Malaga claims this action was due to a delay in the planned discharge of other patients. The affected five patients were ‘outraged’ that they were not operated on the designated day. Everything was in place for the operations to go ahead except one thing: beds.  One patient claims that he has been waiting for one-and-a-half years for his operation.

Hospital professionals say that this is not the first time this has happened. They have 750 beds including those at The Maritime Hospital in Torremolinos but if surgeons have to increase their quota of operations, mainly in the afternoons, the number of beds remains the same. Hospital sources state that it does not happen very often and this time it was because patients  due to be discharged had to stay on for various reasons. He added those affected had been called and given new dates for their operations.
