Silves protest against high tension line

• 15 Nov 2007 •

A GROUP of residents in the Silves area of the Algarve gathered on tuesday outside the Lisbon headquarters of the national electricity distribution company, REN to protest against the installation of a high tension pylon route to connect Tunes and Portimão power stations which would affect almost 300 residents in the area.

The demonstrators, the majority of whom were expatriates who live in the area of Vale Fuzeiros, have already made several protests and held meetings with Silves local council and the Environment Secretary of State to try to convince REN to move the pylon route to another location. Last week a meeting was held following a government announcement that a new route for the high tension line would be considered.

The initial proposal put forward by REN foresaw a route which would cut across Vale Fuzeiros. Unhappy with this prospect nine residents from Vale Fuzeiros went on a hunger strike for two days outside Parliament in Lisbon.

The decision was then taken to change the initial route but the mayor of Silves said the new proposal presented by REN for the route is still not satisfactory as it affects residents elsewhere.

Jaime Costa Fernandes, spokesperson for the Vale Fuzeiros residents committee added: “The works haven’t yet been concluded so we believe REN can still change the route for the high tension pylons and move it just a few kilometres to the north into an uninhabited area.”
