Fishermen rescued after six days adrift

• 15 Nov 2007 •

THREE Portuguese sports fishermen who were missing on the high seas off the coast of the Algarve for six days were rescued by a Cypriot ship. The three men, aged between 20 and 40, were reported missing after leaving on a sports fishing trip from Olhão. The Portuguese Air Force searched with one ship and two aircraft and Spanish authorities provided a helicopter and a patrol boat, all of which proved unsuccessful in finding them. After six days adrift at sea, the three fishermen were found about 100 nautical miles southeast of Cape Saint Vincent and were rescued alive and well by the Cypriot merchant ship, ‘Delmas Filau’. The Portuguese Navy was alerted and sent a patrol boat to retrieve the men and return them to Lisbon.
