Dutch star in ‘Death and the Maiden’

• 15 Nov 2007 •

Later this week Dutch actor, Thomas Hartmann appears as Dr Miranda in Ariel Dorfman’s psychological thriller, ‘Death and the Maiden’. Accused of torture and interrogation, this is a psychological thriller involving the doctor, his accuser and her husband. The play, to be staged in Lagoa at the new auditorium, is directed by John Mountford who has worked in theatres in Brazil, North America and Portugal.

All money raised by ticket sales will be donated to the charity, Castelo dos Sonhos based in Silves. Mr Hartmann has had a long professional career in Holland where he has appeared in cabaret, on television, in films and on stage.

Unlike the frivolous plays that are frequently staged in the Algarve, ‘Death and the Maiden’ strikes a sombre note.

The theme centres on acts committed during a military dictatorship. During that period a woman is tortured and raped. Later her husband, a lawyer, heads an investigation into crimes committed by the fascists. Faced with a chance encounter at her home, the woman believes she has met her chief interrogator, a doctor. With him bound to a chair she attempts to get him to acknowledge his guilt.

Tickets 10 euros. Production dates: - 16 November 8.30pm and November 18th at 4pm. Ticket sales from 916 350 182 or 917 690 166 Email: - benef.actors.pt@gmail.com. See website: - benef.actors.blogspot.com
