• 22 Mar 2007 •

Aperitivo: The association’s new performance groupTHE organisation, Friends of São Brás Museum has held its’ Annual General Meeting to take stock of achievements, made over the last 12 months.

It is a relatively new association that has recruited 580 members and established 14 weekly classes. This record is impressive, making it the fastest growing cultural group in Portugal.

Eight nationalities are represented with the largest proportion being British nevertheless regular talks are held in Portuguese and German and several events have attracted performers of international standing.

The New York City Jazz All Stars have provided entertainment, as well as the Lacerda Quartet, a renowned Chamber music group. World-class opera director, Sonja Frisell a member of Friends has introduced and presented three operas, followed by screenings of the films.

An English language film club meets on a monthly basis, with refreshments themed to match the movie. Similar activities have been arranged for German members.  Live Fado concerts have attracted up to 60 people of all nationalities.

The association has hosted several themed art exhibitions and the Arte Viva festival.  Last month a new performance group staged a production of After Magritte to a packed auditorium.

Another recent initiative an antique auction raised over 700 euros for Friends funds.  More auctions are being planned for the forthcoming year.

Clubs and groups get together on a regular basis using well-appointed, new facilities for their meetings. Interests as diverse as history and gardening attract an enthusiastic following.  These meetings are additional to normal classes that offer sports, dancing, Portuguese lessons, Yoga, art and many other activities, all of them originally suggested by members of Friends.

Two choirs and two instrumental groups rehearse together and so far have performed on 11 occasions. Further one-off ambitious projects are being planned, which will be open to members of the public as well as Friends. The next to take place is in April, on St George’s Day, a date that coincides with Shakespeare’s birthday.

To mark the occasion a special Shakespeare experience is planned.  More details will be published nearer to the time. For more information, visit: www.amigo-museu-sbras.org
