Algarve: EU Open Days official partner
• 22 Mar 2007 •
THE Algarve is among European Union’s 212 regions and cities which have signed up as official partners of the “Open Days”, the biggest event on the European Union’s regional policy calendar, taking place in Brussels from October 8-11.
For the fifth successive year, a record number of regions and cities have signed up as official partners for the “Open Days European Week of Regions and Cities”, organised by the Committee of the Regions and European Commission Directorate-General for Regional Policy. A total of 212 offices of regions and cities – up from 135 last year – will participate in this year’s event.
The overall theme is “Making it happen: Regions deliver growth and jobs” and the partner regions and cities are split into 24 conglomerates, focused on shared challenges in areas such as sustainable energy, science and innovation, inter-regional cooperation, local governance and maritime policy. The Algarve will join Portugal’s Lisbon and Tejo Valley, Spain’s Canary Islands and Italy’s Sicily and Venice as part of EU’s Water-Based Competitiveness Network.
“Every year we say to ourselves that the Open Days surely can't get any bigger and every year the event surpasses all our expectations," said the President of the Committee of the Regions, Michel Delebarre. “I'm delighted that so many regions and cities want to take part because it's their involvement that makes the Open Days a unique success story. The event epitomises the benefits of working in partnership and sharing ideas: together we are making it happen.”
Regional Policy Commissioner Danuta Hübner said: “The number of regions and cities taking part this year is up by more than 55 per cent, which is fantastic. Why such a success?
Because this event is focused on what participants need to know and, to put it simply, because it's all about delivery, interest in the event has now even gone beyond our borders and will facilitate mutual learning on the subject of regional development. Last not least, the Open Days will again go local to inform citizens and potential beneficiaries all over Europe about the opportunities for funding in 2007-2013.”
Workshops, in which more than 30 countries will participate, will address as main themes: attracting investors, regional development, public-private partnerships and financial engineering and cooperation and exchange of best practice supporting growth and jobs. | Return to Top
