Portugal wins Erasmus EuroMedia prize
• 21 Nov 2007 • ‘WAITING FOR EUROPE’, a Portuguese documentary by Christine Reeh, produced by João José Louro, won the Great Prize of the Erasmus EuroMedia Awards 2007. ‘Waiting for Europe’ had already won the ‘Best International Documentary’ at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. The European Society for Education and Communication awards the Erasmus EuroMedia Prizes for outstanding productions and programmes in the sector of media dealing with European values like society, culture, education and politics. Since 1995 the Erasmus EuroMedia Awards have been given to a considerable amount of producers with high profiles for their media oeuvres interpreting Europe.
This year’s winner ‘Waiting for Europe’ is a film about emigration from a feminine point of view which tells the story of Vania, a young Bulgarian woman, who wishes to realise the dream of a better life, searching for her personal independence and identity. During her trip from Bulgaria to Portugal and Spain and back home, she experiences illegality, isolation and exploitation as she tries to find answers for life’s major decisions, while hoping that, one day, the utopia of Europe will actually happen. | Return to Top
