Remembering road traffic accident victims
• 21 Nov 2007 • PORTUGAL has joined the initiatives taking place worldwide to mark the World Road Accident Victim day. In Santarém, the district which this year registered the biggest increase in road deaths, the Road Safety Authority, revealed that between January and November 11, a total of 756 people were killed on Portuguese roads, up by 46 from the same period last year. However, the Interior Ministry said Portugal has improved dramatically its accident statistics, including last year's record performance when it registered the second largest drop in road fatalities and injuries among the EU countries.
The Secretary of Sate for Civil Protection, Ascenso Simões, took part in the national homage to road victims in Santarém, while the Interior Minister Rui Pereira, came to the Algarve to inaugurate a new traffic school in Lagoa. The minister announced that the government is getting ready to open a new office in the Algarve to carry out studies aiming to increase road safety in the region.
According to the latest available statistics, road accidents have killed more than 66,000 people in Portugal in the last 30 years.
The Association of Self- Mobilised Citizens has defined this situation by saying: “There is civil war happening on Portuguese roads.”
The government has recently announced that the Traffic Police will receive two million euros for more speed radars and breathalysers. | Return to Top
