Armed forces committed to fighting illegal immigration

• 21 Nov 2007 •

PORTUGAL’S armed forces have been involved in the military exercise “Able Protector 2007” which took place off the country’s southwestern coast. The exercise simulated an episode in which a merchant ship was trying to offload illegal immigrants somewhere on the Portuguese coast. As the ship approached Portuguese waters, it was spotted by an Air Force sea patrol helicopter which informed the Portuguese Navy. The ship was intercepted by the Vasco da Gama frigate and stopped from carrying out its illegal activities.

The aim of the joint exercise was to show other countries how committed Portugal is in the fight against illegal activities at sea as well as its ability to carry out search and rescue missions. The commanding officer of the exercise, Navy Commander Silvestre Correia, said: “We are not faced with this problem yet but it is getting close, especially because Spain’s coasts are now secure enough to block maritime access to illegal immigration. The next target for those illegal immigration rings could soon be our Algarve coast and Portugal is ready to fight illegal immigration.”
