Pioneering genetics law

• 22 Nov 2007 •

THE genetics law recently approved by Parliament will allow people in Spain to know of which genetic diseases they are at risk. These diseases are reportedly the main cause of death of people before the age of 14 in Andalucia and plans are being made for a public DNA bank with a base in Granada. This is a pioneering law in Spain as well as in other European countries; its main objective being detecting possible pathologies and carrying out genetic analysis to aid biomedical investigation and health care.

General Practitioners will receive the information to then pass on to their patients. All information will be confidential and the patient also has the right to not be informed of the genetic results obtained. The genetic analysis will also determine whether there are groups within the population who would benefit from preventative medical interventions.
