Christmas road safety operation
• 29 Nov 2007 •
THE ‘Safe Christmas’ road safety operation for this year has already started. Until January 7, PSP and GNR Police officers, Civil Protection and the Road Safety Association will be on Portuguese roads to assist drivers and to persuade people to respect the Highway Code. The 2007 ‘Safe Christmas’ operation is included in the government-sponsored ‘Death on the Road - Let's Put an End to This’ campaign which started earlier this year to reduce the road traffic death toll in Portugal.
Assistant Superintendent Pedro Moura of the PSP Police said: “This year the operation starts two weeks earlier than usual,” adding that the goals are to boost “a dissuasive and proactive attitude aimed at lowering the number of accidents and crimes during Christmas, and to increase the feeling of safety for citizens through a series of measures.” He also said that in the second phase of the operation from December 14 onwards, there will be an increase in the number of policemen on patrol with a further 300 officers and 140 vehicles. Those officers are usually deployed to patrol schools and as soon as the schools close for the holiday season they will be transferred to the ‘Safe Christmas’ operation.
This year there will also be a reinforcement of about 600 officers of riot police in Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Braga, Setúbal, Aveiro, Leiria and Santarém. To increase police presence, traffic patrolling and criminal investigations, there will be around 3,000 policemen on the beat and around 90 dog teams in the main shopping areas of the country. Around 20 PSP police mobile posts will be in place at tourist spots and shopping areas, and more policing will be directed at public transports and nightlife. | Return to Top
