Ryanair closes Faro-Madrid air route after ten months

• 29 Nov 2007 •

THE Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has closed the route between Faro and Madrid. After operating the route for ten months, Ryanair considered that the rate of occupancy of airplane seats was insufficient to ensure the viability of the route so they decided to close it.

In a joint statement, the Algarve Tourism Association, the National Tourism Promotion Agency and the ANA, the company who runs Faro Airport, stated that despite all their efforts and the highly competitive fares, the average occupancy rate on flights was only 48.3 per cent, admitting that there was much less demand for the air route than they had expected. However the Portuguese Tourism Authorities stressed that the development of the Madrid market, which is strategic for the Algarve region, is dependent on the existence of direct flights between the Algarve and the Spanish capital and that’s why they have joined forces to launch this air route, supported by the Regional System to Promote New Routes.

The tourism bodies added in the statement that they are convinced of the potential of Madrid as a sending market for the Algarve and of the necessity to keep a route operating for a longer period of time which they believe is the only way to see a real consolidation of the demand.

The tourism bodies concluded by saying that they are firmly committed to continue their work to find a solution to re-open this air route as soon as possible.
