Portuguese soldiers to leave Afghanistan

• 29 Nov 2007 •

THE Portuguese Government announced its decision to reduce the number of troops in Afghanistan. Defence minister Nuno Severiano Teixeira told Parliament the Portuguese troops taking part in the Nato force in Afghanistan, which currently number 162, would be reduced by August 2008 to 15 and a C-130 airplane. This decision has already triggered a response form American authorities. The US Ambassador to Portugal, Alfred Hoffman, said he was “deeply concerned with Portugal's plans to reduce its efforts in support of the young Afghan democracy,” adding that he was very hopeful that Portugal would reverse that decision. The Ambassador stressed he was not totally surprised since European leaders seem to be more daunted by opinion polls than they are determined to win over public opinion about the importance of the fight in Afghanistan. Alfred Hoffman warned: “Turning our backs on the Afghan people in this moment of their struggle is the same as abandoning them, as well as our principles and our security.”
