Hilarious festive farce

• 29 Nov 2007 •

See how they run: An astute cast of nine performerTHERE’S nothing like a romping farce on stage to stir up the festive British spirit. A theatrical production of ‘See how they Run’, shortly to be seen at Lagoa and Faro, holds the promise of a great start to the Christmas season. Staged by A Portada Theatre Group and directed by Priscilla Morgan, the hilarious comedy is likely to rouse the audience into a merry mood.

Written by Philip King, a synopsis of the play foretells disaster when an actress married to a vicar is invited by a male colleague to dine in town. Circumstances compel her companion to dress up in her husband’s clothes and, as an inquisitive parishioner observes the innocent couple, the stage is set for farce.

An astute cast of nine delivers the fast moving dialogue and action. Timing is an all-important aspect for the actors on the stage. A sharp-witted audience is required to follow the circuitous plot.

The two venues due to stage the play are in marked contrast to each other. In Lagoa the municipal auditorium is one of the newest in the Algarve, whereas Teatro Lethes in Faro is one of the oldest.

The first production to be staged there was seen in 1845 and, to the delight of Faro audiences, the theatre had been created to look like the São Carlos Opera House in Lisbon, modelled on La Scala in Milan.

The audience of 250 people, seated in the stalls and 51 boxes in three upper tiers, was supplemented by standing- room-only in the Gods.

In recent years this upper gallery has been permanently closed but otherwise the theatre has remained exactly as it was.

A mythical river, said to cleanse all problems, inspired the name Teatro Lethes. Its founder, Lazaro Doglioni, an Italian doctor who had settled in Faro, would probably be pleased to note the theatre’s latest role, catering for present day expatriates living in the Algarve. Thanks to good cooperation between the A Portada Theatre Group and the Cultural Council of the Faro Municipal Câmara this has now become possible.
